Ayurvedic medicine or Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest medicine established some five thousand years ago in India. The name Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit language and comprises of the words "Ayur" and "Veda". Ayur =life and Veda = science or knowledge and thus its termed as "Science of Life".
Even though it is considered as an "Alternative Medicine", by the Western world, more and more people are taking to it, as it is supposed to establish the balance in the body by diet, lifestyle, and body cleansing and on the health of the mind, body and spirit, and more so as it has no side effects.
Unlike the western medicines - allopath which consists of chemical mixture or compounds, Ayurvedic medicine consists of herbs, plants, spices, and even minerals, and the plants are categorized according to their effects -relieving pain, healing, promoting vitality etc. and the preparations are made for each individuals ailment and thus Consumer health care plays an important role in Ayurveda, as it aims to have a balance of the body, mind and soul and prevent illness and promote well being. Based on the treatment, they provide nourishment to the body and have no side effects. Whilst modern medicine targets on fat loss, Ayurveda deal on obesity - Fatty tissues accumulate when one has a poor digestion, as cleansing is inadequate. Commonly grown herbs, spices, fruits have curative properties which when mixed and matched can help the body to detoxify and be cleansed.
Various skin care products made on vedic formulations, are available as over the counter products. Ayurvedic beauty and skin care products are formulated from herbs and plants and not from essential oils and are thus different from most natural skin and hair care products. According to Ayurveda, the body has seven layers of tissues called "Dhatus" - the outer layer being the skin and the inner most being blood plasma. The body has channels called "Srotas" which pass through them. When the channels are blocked with toxins, they become seat for disease and imbalance in the body. Herbs like curcumin, turmeric have anti bacterial properties and being rich in vitamins help to tone the body whilst saffron and honey helps the skin to be smooth and glow.
As the awareness of Ayurveda grows, more and more people are taking to it as it helps to rejuvenate the body.
